WHO is PETRA PAFFEN ?
Originally, I am a marine biologist, graduated at the University of Amsterdam in 1992. Before graduation, I worked in restaurants, bars, dancings, hotels, a milk- and plastic factory, butcher and a sea aquarium. Between 1992 and 1998, I lived an worked for the UN on fish biology around Lake Tanganyika in Africa. You can read my adventures there in the acknowlegdements (pages from 194 onwards) of the doctoral thesis of my man, Victor Langenberg. Upon our return in 1998, I worked as socio-economic consultant for the same organisation in Rome. Since 1999 as senior advisor and programme manager for the Dutch Ministry of Traffic and Water management. First for 7 years in Rotterdam and after that in Delft, one of the sweetest, old towns in the Netherlands.
We have three sons under 8 years of age. Consequently, I hardly find enough time for painting and sculpturing. In september 2009, during my last baby-home-leave, I created this website, aiming to find an audience by selling my work. As my production is rather low, I would like to be able to expose new work whenever it is ready. Preferably, with help of a gallery or buyer, that wants to advocate my style internationally.
I have not found one yet, so ideas are wellcome!
I am inspired by many people, situations and artists AROUND ME. Great explorers as Ernest Shackleton and David Livingstone fascinate me. To give you the best idea, I hereby refer to internationally known artists that I adore: Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Fra Andrea Pozzo, Vincent van Gogh, Camille Claudel, Umberto Boccioni, Pablo Picasso and many African artists that you could and can find along all African roads. In my opinion, all of them are followers of the barocque idea that
'art reflects life as a grand theathric display'.
